The Environmental Impact of Digital Learning

 Digital learning has seen an exponential growth over the past decade, and the trend seems to be accelerating, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many educational institutions, from kindergarten to higher education, have Learning Management Systems (LMS)  adopted online learning methods to ensure the continuity of education while keeping the safety of students and staff a top priority. However, this shift has not only changed the way we teach and learn but has also raised concerns about its impact on the environment. While it's evident that digital learning reduces the need for physical infrastructure, transportation, and paper usage, there is a significant environmental cost associated with the energy consumption and electronic waste generated by the devices used for online learning.
